Ubuntu Linux - 115 Free Installation CDs (Macs & PCs)Posted by finkployd in
Info  So there I was, sitting naked in a refrigerator, when it struck me that if I could provide an Operating System (OS) that was both, Free as in Beer, and Free as in Speech, I might actually get through to those who want to unshackle themselves from the Vole (Microsoft). So I ordered 115 CDs of Ubuntu Linux, regarded as the most user-friendly Linux Distribution, and which happens to be both Libre and Gratis, to distribute to all those interested in adopting Linux in Lebanon. I've got Mac Versions, PC Versions, and AMD64 Versions. Good luck with your quest ... however I don't think you will succeed !
First of all, because of piracy, windows costs nothing in lebanon so the price is no issue. Second those who care about Freedom have already gotten a copy of their favorite linux distro up and running a long time ago. In all cases it's a good cause to use your blog to promote Ubunto fa good luck. One last small nitpick maybe you should clarify the Free issue, to the un-inciated Free as in Beer and Free as in Speach is just a weird expression that means absolutely nothing. Free as in beer? But beer is not free ... Maybe at least say "free as in free beer" or better yet explain what you mean :-) Pat
Yes, piracy is rampant.
Yes, all geeks already have their own distribution of Linux. But here I am, sitting with a box of 115 that now stands at 107. And I have yet to make much fanfare of the whole situation. Below are the reasons why I should, and I must succeed: - Even if you were to get Linux from the local CD shop, you would have to pay 5,000 to 10,000 Lira, for something that is not even legitimate. I on the other hand, am distributing all CDs free of charge, from the Source without alterations. - Weaning people off of MS products is necessary in the long-run. For in the near-to-distant future, we will become a lawful state that appreciates and respects proprietary software as just that. If we are not familiar with Libre & Gratis software, we will be at a disadvantage. - Ubuntu Linux is as easy to install and use as Windows XP for the first-time user. - Ubuntu Linux can run on older machines without the slowdown that Windows XP experiences. We're talking a Pentium with 32MB of RAM. But most of all, it's because people like yourself find a positive note in my providing awareness for Ubuntu Linux. Another advantage of the Ubunto CDs is that if you pop them into windows you get a few open source windows programs too ... I think it was firefox Gaim and a couple others! It might help people that are scared of the idea to see that they will get programs as good as and sometimes better (ex firefox) than the ones they are already using which might encourage them to switch even if only part time! I also think one of the biggest drawbacks is the lack of a client that supports MSN voice/video chat ... Last time I checked Gaim could not do that easilly.

About the IM client, there's always Skype, and then there's Google Talk. Thanks for the info about Firefox and the such. Also, I doubt one can get AMD64 and PowerPC linux distributions in Lebanon. That's a major advantage on my part. I'm planning a Beowulf cluster in our office. Anyone who's interested in contributing old hardware, pls E-mail me at [email protected] pax

I have to admit the response is better than I had though it would be :-) Actually on the subject of ubunto CDs, a collegue showed up at work holding one the other day, I asked "where did you get it from?" and he said they were being distributed at the entrance of the building :-) So I guess you are not alone on your quest!
Ummm.... what's the name of the building in question??
