The Anthropologist comments on the New York Times article ->

"This is also a sad commentary on the invidious gender discrimination that exists in Lebanese society. Society views women's fulfillment as being situated in getting married and starting a family; careers and work options are a clear second place.
Young women find it more difficult to leave the country, indeed are actively discouraged from doing so, whether for work or for studies.
So no wonder the girls are desperate to meet the young men who return on visits: they are their ticket to fulfillment, whether in their social roles or to be able to leave of a society that constrains their options. The lack of eligible males makes the competition more desperate. The jungle imagery ( 'the girls pounce') is hardly flattering.
In all cases, both genders lose. Women are confirmed in dependent roles instead of becoming full and equal citizens. Men are encouraged to become playboys, and view the other half of the population with patronising indulgence or contempt. When are we going to be able to get out of this vicious circle?!"
