I'm cognizant that my views do not mirror the majority of views found on this blog and this question is not being asked to antagonize. I genuinely want to hear your thoughts - Can someone please answer this question for me: If Lebanon has been "set back 50 years" and is being "ripped to shreds", as it claims, why would their government reject proposals for any kind of a ceasefire? Seems like if your situation is as dire as you claim it to be you'd be willing to accept any kind of ceasefire, regardless of it's conditions, just so that violence will end. It's pretty evident that Lebanon as well as Hizbollah want a ceasefire on their own terms (which I can understand), but how exactly does a givernment take that position if it's being "slaughtered" in a so-called "massacre"? The rejection of Rice's terms for a ceasefire tells me that Lebanon's "crisis" isn't as awful as it portends to be.
this is only my point of view.
surrendering by israel's conditions would be like telling the world and israel that we accept what they are doing to be ok. if the lebanese govt accepts unfair terms, it's an invitavtion to israel to run our country. a few months in the future, israel could start bombing us until we stop constructing a damn on the litani river. then they might bomb lebanon for importing fruits from syria, because in their point of view, that constitutes supporting terrorism. this is an extreme example, but basically the govt would lose even more control. although hizbolla has a militia, they are also a party in the govt. they've done both good and bad things, so they have the support of some people. surrendering to unfair terms could lead to a civil war. and now a question for you. lebanon's offered some terms of cease fire as well. they want their people and land back, and bombings to stop. for that, they agreed to take back control of the south and arrange for the soldiers to be returned. and i expect that these terms have been coordinated with hizbolla. so they might even leave the south peacefully under these conditions. now this is exactly what israel claims it's trying to achieve by bombing the shit out of innocent people. you tell me why they haven't accepted these terms?
Lebanon & the world are demanding a complete cease fire. Its Israel & US that havent quenched their thirst for human blood and are refusing all calls for cease fire. Where the heck are you getting informatin that Lebanon is refusing a cease fire?

Clay, this is not at all a complaint but a way to show you that despite all the shelling we will keep on living and partying and enjoying life. We've been through a major war before and we will survive this one and come out even stronger.

please, please, please. don't let this stupidity go on. the arab armies have never been strong enough to beat israel. and their army keeps getting stronger, while the arab armies get weaker. saying things like that only distracts the public from what's really going on.
if we get smart and stop thinking with our... (i don't know what we're thinking with now), we will either come to some peace agreement that all sides can agree on, or the israelis will just end up wiping themselves off the face of the earth.

dude. be careful with american news agencies. cnn interviewed an american friend of mine when she got to cyprus. she told them how the israelis have been carpet bombing and hitting dairy farms and wheat silos. they edited and made sound like that was what hizbollah is doing.

wow. what wold do you live in? the death toll's right on this page. lasat time i checked it, hizbolla's "score" was under 20. the israelis on the other hand..... no need to say more. i hate stupid people.
so on one side i have 400+ dead people and a country that's been financially destroyed, and nearly a million homeless people who just might start starving soon. and hospitals are running out of supplies to treat the wounded.
on the other side, i have about 40 dead people and a million people that are being devastated because of all the time they're spending in their bunkers. if this doesn't stop soon, thousands of people might start dying of boredom. not emphasizing the second group of people isn't called being biased. it's called having priorities. the israelis also have priorities. in mathematical terms: X = 100 lebanese children U = 250 other lebanese people V = an entire country's economy Y = 2 kidnapped soldiers Z = releasing lebanese held in israeli prison W = land held by israel that doesn't belong to them. and the equation ends up looking something like this.... X+U+V < Y < Z+W with an equation like that to deal with, i can understand why israelis are so confused.
I see your point about being fair, they both shoot rockets....however to be truly fair, you should realize the destructive power of the two.
From what I've read, the Katyusha rockets (note rockets, not bombs) were designed by the Russians in WWII.They are 50 pounds. Have they been updated since then? I don't know but highly doubt, it. Most counries come up with new names. The Israerlis on the other hand, are dropping minimum 500 pound bombs (I heard in one day they dropped 25 tons of bombs) Right there you have a 10 fold difference in destructive power and a 50 year differnce in technolgy. Now I am no rocket scientist (pun intended, a little humor never hurts) but it would sem to me that these figures in and of themselves, make the "conflict" just a tad one sided. It reminds me of the picture of the Pelestinian teenagers throwing rocks at the Israeli tanks, then getting fired on. I didn't think that was a fair response. But then again, we are in the part of the world where David met Goliath, only this isn't a bible story. Do you get the difference?

After getting Southern Lebanon back, what do you guys do? Complain about a kernel of land, that is the Shebaa Farms which the UN says was never within Lebanese borders-- and end up receiving the ire of Israel. All this destruction and gratuitous loss of life, were they worth the Shebaa farms? The UN proposed that Syria quit claim on the Farms, so that negotiations may start to resolve the issue. It seems to me that Hizballah should be more angry towards the Syrians for not quitting claim. But then again, Syrians are their puppeteers, can't have adversity there! AS far as the Syria smothering the voices of freedom, how can you say you don't know about that! Anyhow, maybe if you tackle the issues broached here, instead of ad hominems, then we might have an edifying discourse. That is if your can resist your Mid-eastern urge to avoid discussion and resort to censorship! |
