In December, the Lebanese Government launched a campaign, the I Love Life Campaign, which involved plastering all available billboard space with I Love Life posters... A truly red spectacle, costing no less than millions of dollars, to remind us that we love life - i'm pretty sure the millions could have been better spent on heating oil for the poor whose love for life won't keep them warm.
In January, the Opposition Movement responded with its own I Love Life Campaign, same font, same colors, same concept, but much much wittier. The outcome? More red billboards, still no heating oil for the poor.
Since the heating oil issue isn't even on the agenda, let's appreciate these two campaigns for what they're worth, as measured by the impact on the general populace.
To this end, the Opposition Movement wins hands down, especially with the messages:
"In Lebanon" : to express frustration with the fact that the existing Lebanese government (since 1992) has done nothing to keep the youths from emigrating in search of a better life. today, the ratio of women to men in Lebanon is close to 7:1...
"Without Debt" : to express frustration with the fact that the existing Lebanese government (since 1992) has taken us from 3-4 Billion USD of National Debt in 1991, to 41 Billion USD of National Debt in 2007, and that the interest on this debt exceeds our current GDP.
"With Dignity" : to express frustration with the fact that in the last 10 years, Lebanon has been transformed into a playground for Gulf States (Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in particular) who have bought our lands, prostituted our women, and suppressed our livelihoods.
"UnDictated" : to express frustration with the fact that since 1991, the government has yet to make a decision on its own - first it was the Syrians, then it was the Saudis, what next, the Martians?
