is it not absurd that on one side of the border,

hello beirut, i really missed lebanon i live in houston, texas i watch news every day and it makes me mad and angry as lebanese to watch my country destroy by the cowards of isreal, they think their big guns and air force can intimidate the lebanse people but they thought wrong. i thought USA was supportive of lebanon and friends of lebanon but NO they friends of isreal we've should known better than having BUSH AND CANDALEEZA RICE AS OUR PHONY FRIENDS WE DO NOT NEED THESE KIND OF FRIENDS.we lebanse always make it through hard and difficult times.
These people that just rely on insults have no mental capacity for higher thoughts and are just brainwashed by the media.. It does angers me and I wish I could tell them fuck off, wake up and look at the facts.. I won't get to their ignorant level.. Many people, specially outside the US, are with Lebanon and do recognize the injustices and cold blooded killings that are going on in this beautiful country.. just because you don't see it on cnn or fox news it doesn't mean it is not there..

Could you explain to me what "third world" means? - Are we not civilized enough to be like the US where they attack sovereign countries and kill innocent children? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where there is a major crime and drugs problem, e.g., over 90% of teens experience drugs before the age of 16? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where more than half of the people don't go to college and that is if they finish high school? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where they call their parents names and that is if they even have any relationship with them? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where there is a divorce rate of more than 55%? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where they are so ignorant and arrogant that they have no clue of world affairs and real facts � that is of course if they know the name of more than one country outside North America? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where they have a redneck and an idiot for a president? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where in spite of being the richest country on earth, they import not only all goods and services but also human brain power, e.g., outsourcing white color jobs not only blue color jobs? - Are we not civilized enough like the US where their head is so far up their ass that all people on the face of earth can�t stand them except for the terrorist country � Israel � that uses them? So, please enlighten me Robert, exactly what do you mean by �third world�? Tell me Robert, what education level and achievements you have made in your life that makes you so proud of yourself and your wonderful �first class citizenship�? Hey Zahi, don't get upset you shouldn't even reply to these ignorants comments. You can't bring them up to the level of a smart educated conversation no matter how hard you try and they'll end up dragging you to their ignorant standards. We all know that we are smarter and much much more educated (I'm a PhD and I'm in the cancer drug development field and my work will save their ignorant asses one day). I would like to apologize for these "people" who have come here to spread their hate in your time of need. I assure you, all Americans are not like them. Citizens like these mke me crine and understand why there is so much hatred of my country.
I don't know where they/he are/is from, I can presume at least one from Texas, but I assure you, that as far as Texas is concerned, there are a lot of us who would prefer they seceded from the union, fly the flaa of the LLone Star State and become the Lone Star Country. Oh yeah, and take your preident and his friends with them. To come on to someone's blog, in a time when they are suffering a devastating war, shows your ignorance, uncultured nature and absolute lack of class. But then that is Texas, a state (among others) that never gave up its racist roots. The more frightemn thing is they are probably born again Christians (like their president). And while you're there, why not pull out your Bible and have someone read you the passage that says "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Perhaps your reading comprehension wasn't up to grade level the first time you read it, because you obviously understand neither the meaning of the words nor its practical application. We have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the industrial world. We incaercerate more people than any country in the world We are the only industrial nation in the world that uses the death penalty, and until the Supreme Court outlawed it a few years ago, we were one of only 4 countries that sentenced juveniles to death. I don't remember the countries I could find out if you want to know, but I believe a couple were in the axis of evil. Good company for the leader of the free world. So there are those that consider these policies of ours barbaric and I must say I agree with them, on these issues. So I don't see the U.S. wih a moral high ground, but I do see them saying " do as I say, not as I do." As for the population, yes we are growing, but the white birth rate is lower than the Hispanic birth rate and the Muslim birth rate. The black birth rate is lower than than the other two and highher than whites, but not by much. America has a lot going for it. There were times when I wanted to live somewhere else for a while, but I couldn't think of anywhere else I'd want to live. That's no longer true. This country, and many of the people in it, have changed, and not for the better. We need to regain the trust the world had in us. Superpower status also requires responsbility to set the example of good behavior. We've been failin miserably at that for decades. But we don't do that. This administration is a conglomerate of the worst of the countries they porpend to abhorre. From torture, imprisonment with no due process, on suspician alone, wiretapping American citizens, ignoring the will of the Congress, stifling the press, just to name of few things. These are not American values. At least not the America I grew up in.

Lebanon is not a third world country. In fact most of Beirut is more modern than any U.S. city. Thats right, the Lebanese are very rich, modern, decent people. And you know what, their smart too. Smarter than youll ever be... And also you said that this was a joke of a blog. This is the best blog site I have ever been on. I can get more info about the current situation in Lebanon off of hear in a day than I could if I watched U.S. news media for over a month. I live in the U.S. And you know what, the lebanese have it way better than us. Ever heard about "Solidere". They are ( were, dont know if they are still in oporation currently ) making the Beirut's central district the most desirable shopping district in the middle East, and making it also the most "modern" shopping district on the planet. We keep hearing about the third world , but I am a bit confused where is the first world and the second...
I cant't believe i'm hearing such things... You, Robert, just have no heart. Saying such things, talking about democracy and freedom when Israeli cre continuing to kill children... This dead children are terrorist? Thet prostituted themselfs to hezbullah and bin laden?....... You are just mentally ill and you need a serious medical help. I I regrette for you soul which will go to hell.
So for you America is the example of freedom and democracy and of free people who make their own decisions... So what a nice sociaty, where people take their own desicions to kill adopted children and to rape Iraqi women and girls. What a society when people prefer to watch fox (or, i am sorry, you don't, you prefer a must more "objective" cnn), channels that show so imagined world with some strange ideas of "right" and "wrong". I pray too that your country can act in the worlds interest and that you can rid us once and for all Mr Bush and his politics.
I think Robert you need to get ur facts straight... Before u act like u know what u r doing. Maybe if u put ur conceitness aside u might be able to appreciate facts.
To start with, do me a favor: why don't u check how many Lebanese citizens are working and studying in the harvard system you are so proud of coming from... I know 10 at least... And the reason why they are here is because of the US policy in the middle east: lucky for u to have them there. If u look around the states and the world, u will be able to see that Lebanon (which is only 10,452 Km2 or 4 million people) is among the top countries to have exported influential people. TO give u an example in ur own field: Michael Debakey, a world renown cardiothoracic surgeon, whom I am sure u know of, is Lebanese. For other famous people check this website http://www.cedarsusa.com/prominent/amleb.htm I would also like to remind u that Hizbullah is not considered a terrorist organization by the rest of the world (excluding Israel and USA). For example the EU. They are part of the country and the people in Lebanon. Just like u don't like Bush but he is ur president, we might not like their policy but they are part of our country and Lebanon is a true democracy. As for ur brothers in the ME, well, it is very sad that they are givin up their lives for the oil and not for establishing democracy in the ME, NOR for abolishing terrorism. As u know Lebanon is the only democracy in the ME and the US is supporting Israel as it destroys it. So maybe if u control the hate in u and objectively assess the facts u will be able to see the world in a new light.
If anything Robert has said about himself is true what it proves very simply is that he is still an ignorant racist. I feel sorry for someone who claims to have had a top-class education and yet is still so bigoted and ignorant and pathetic. The fact that he has to come on a blog and spew his hatred must mean that he is an extremely sad and pathetic indivdual with not much of a life.
See Robert, normal people don't go around writing racist nasty ignorant things on websites about groups of other people in their spare time. This is not normal behavior and shows a real lack of maturity on your part. Counseling may do the trick for you. I suggest you also try and enlighten your own viewpoint. Movies like the Wall by Simone Bitton, in which she interviews both Israelis and Palestinians on the effect that this situation has on them (she's a Jew) or Measheimer and Walt's essay in the LBR. You don't have to 'pro-alqaeda' (who is?) to recognize that what Israel does is wrong. Nor are you anti-semitic. And btw if you do have relatives in the ME they are in Iraq which we can quite rightly say is different and screwed up by the US. Incompentence goes a long way. Or they are in Afghanistan which is the same deal. Incompetence by the US by very well eduacted people who don't know how to create peace. And Hezbollah was created by the Israelis as was Hamas. People sometimes create their own enemies much like you have. And much like the US is doing now. We all know who will suffer thanks to these policies: Americans,Israelis and Brits.
Thank you for your support and feedback. I want to make it clear to everyone and in particular Americans, I certinaly know that each and every country has opportunities including my home country Lebanon. I love America and I am married to an American. I have a great respect to many Americans and I do know Robert does not represent the majority. I apologize if I offended any Americans in my response to Robert above. His comments were very hateful and hurtful and I had to repsonse the way I did.
It is very sad that a great country like the US has so many racists and hateful people these days. It makes it very difficult for people like me when we go home to visit to say positive things about the US, nevertheless, we always work hard on educating people and most of them know better. I hope we all come out of this more mature and peaceful. Perhaps Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld can learn a thing or two from Julie and other reasonable and decent Americans like her.
Zahi- I'm an American married to a Lebanese. We've taken our four kids to Lebanon many times, traveled all over and only had excellent experiences.
Lebanese are the best hosts to tourists from all over the world. They are educated, thoughtful, respectful and very international- And they know how to have fun. My kids didn't want to leave because in Lebanon PEOPLE ARE CONNCECTED. Americans seem to be disconnected. My kids felt it and did not want to leave it. There is much deeper and closer extended family unit there. The Lebanon that you and I know, has never been shown on TV here in the states, we only see the extremists and the constant re-runs of the Marine Bombings in 1982. So, for Robert and people like President Bush-- it is so obvious that they have no idea how progressive and peaceful the people of Lebanon are. Its hard to imagine given the negative media images that polute our news channels. I think the any president of the United States should be required to spend time in all these Arab countries before they can run for president, so maybe they can actualy gain a better perspective.

You really are caught in the middle so to speak. Remember, everyone is right from their point fo view. Don't allow the things that go against your feelings and beliefs to feel like personal attacks that begin to affect you. They are beliefs, points of view,...., towards cultures and cultural differences, towards very large scale acts, towards regions and religions and histories, towards things that are big and nebulous and obscure the people and feelings of those people hidden by them. It is these conversations, these posted photos, ideas, dreams/hopes/fears/angers, that help us remember that people are all the same - we may belive differently, talk differently, eat different foods, but we all bleed red and cry tears and laugh when we're happy. Remember the things said here that hurt are generalizations, and (generealizing here...) those are always partially right and partially wrong and very mixed. Zahi - I'll be watching for the posters.
