More Stalactite / Stalagmite sculptures in the backyard!
All ready to be placed on their specially designed concrete stands! Surely that would jack-up the price of the apartments! Hope this doesn't become a bad habit :( like so many other unpunished ones here...   Saw these on my way up to Harissa...
Which begs the questions: - Where are they from? - Are they natural Stalactites / Stalagmites? - If yes, is it legal to saw off Stalactites / Stalagmites for private use?        tags: lebanon, stalactites, stalagmites, beirut, harissa, photo, image, picture, harissa, speleology Trackbacks

I find it mind blowing to think of the actual labor that went through cutting them down, as you can see in image 429, it was cut using a drill and not a saw. But anyway, how did they bring them out of the grotto/cave to here? They have to weigh at least a ton or two! It took them at least a month to get this done, we have many grottoes and caves in Lebanon, but no matter what, this has to be illegal!
I saw a few of these several times on my way to "faytroun". It could be from there (in the open). Someone should sue them!

They will be so cute in a garden next to some columns from Jbeil and an altar from Baalbeek.
Why dont you send this to the media. Can they do anything about it ??

during the last yearly maintenance of Geta grotto they did Stalagmites that were close to collapse, if these pics are new, then i guess these are the parts that they did cut this year (maintenance took place few weeks ago) yet you can never rule out the theory of theft, we are in lebanon remember :)

they're beautiful. I hope someone follows up on this and finds out how they were obtained. Are the Stalagmites that are sawed off in maintenance operations available for public purchase? I bet the newspapers would be interested in investigating and publishing an article on the issue, even if these come from maintenance activities. I bet people would be intersted in how the caves are kept up.
because it seems like there is a house being built in the background, I'd assume they found those digging to put in the foundations of the houseand sawed them off, as to what they intend to do with them, I don't know...
Tks for the heads up, I have forwarded your email to the speleoclub du Liban immediately, and Ill let you know if I hear from them as soon as I do. PS those are columns, as in from ceiling to floor (plus draperies) They seem quite genuine to me

We kindly ask the writer of the title of the above photos to immediately remove the name of Jeita Grotto as these pieces of column stones are definitely not a part of Jeita Cave rock formations because it's not allowed to take any cm of these stone formations from Jeita caves. This kind of allegations is not a joke but only harming the reputation of Jeita Grotto and Lebanon.
We like to keep clean the image of Jeita Grotto especially that we are participating in an international Natural Wonders competition. Only individuals working against the nature in Lebanon can cut such stone.

this is not only distateful and gross, but also shows how individuals destroy nature carelessly. from wherever those were obtained.
when we were hiking in bcharre couple years ago we saw a garden with tons of stalactites stolen from the Kadisha caves. also those are made of a very fragile cristalline structure that will erode rapidly with rain and pollution. again shwing the total ignorance of both architect and owner. if i were in lebanon i would go and spray paint them. with a big F word. as in Fullstop.
i received a responce from the ministry of tourism and they seem interested in following that up. they asked if it was on the main road to Harissa i said yes.
also this piece is too big to have occured on its own - it was definitely not found on site but was extraceted from a large cave - where it was formed. |
