Three years have passed since the February 14 Explosion at the St George Square.
Today, a memorial built illegally - without permit or rights to the land - on the St George Square stands in the shadow of the destroyed St George Hotel. The Saniora Government, on orders of Solidere, has blocked the reconstruction and compensation funds of the St George Hotel, to force the owners to sell to Solidere. The sale of the St George Hotel to Solidere would effectively place all of Downtown Beirut under the control of Solidere.  Trackbacks

I don't see why this monument is illegal. Camping in downtown Beirut and blocking businesses for such a long time is illegal. Arm smuggling from neighbouring countries is also illegal. A monument is not such a big deal compared to that!
This monument has simply been built with no license.
If people are "Camping in downtown Beirut..." It's not for the fun of it, they may have a reason. For example trying to stop a government composed of people who brought us to were we are ... ie 40 billion in debt...
Illegal or not, some would say crippling local businesses (not to mention the tourism industry) by camping out in downtown is hardly the best way get the country out of a 40 billion debt??!!
