Flattening Beirut
From Blogging Beirut (via Deep Blade), before and after satellite images of a Beirut neighborhood. Seen from this remove it's bad enough, but then you think of all the lives shattered or ended by the destruction, you imagine the screams,...
I'm from Poland. I've seen adress of your blog in newspaper's official site, in article about war in Liban. http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,53600,3519040.html?skad=rss
It's really sad, that Lebaneses are dying, but TV news shows just ruins of houses and buildings, they don't say anything about victims of war, so most people think that it's not so bad in Liban- couple of ruins, couple of victims... "nothing special"...
Hi,
Your blog is important to me, you have to write it, don't stop! In TV shows us only short informations only when Israel bombing or Hezbollah or civils have died. We really don't know what is situation of Lebaneses people.
I don't understand why world - espetially UE - don't do anything to help of Liban ?! About US ... no comment in my opinion they are the same like Israel.
I'm looking hearing from you here.
Don't worry, tomarrow can be better...
Batory, Poland
olegt,
read the wikipedia article.
the bombing of dresden had no strategic purpose.
it was only executed to terrorize the germans (not just the nazis).
bombing residential neighborhoods is a war crime as per the geneva conventions.
not a single rocket or missle was fired at israel from beirut.
if you lived in the same building as an 'evil' person. would you accept being murdered along with the 'evil' person?
be careful with your words. they border on condoning war crimes.
Olegt,
And how do you know they are hizbollah buildings? HOW DO YOU KNOW ??
tell me!
or you 're only just assuming! or is it just because israel says so. You're right! me too i would believe everything israel says if i had half of my brain missing!!
Ooooh you really should'nt be waisting our time and energy with this type of comments.

Dear Prime Minister, Most people in this country are, we believe, horrified at the bloodshed and destruction unfolding daily in Lebanon. There can be no justification for the conduct of the Israeli government and armed forces, which are laying waste to a country in an operation which will hugely damage the prospects for peace in the Middle East.
We are dismayed that the British government, almost alone in the world, is not calling for a ceasefire to enable the suffering to stop. This either shows a deplorable indifference to the plight of the Lebanese people or an attitude of total subservience to the foreign policy of the US administration. Either way, our country is being humiliated and our isolation from world opinion underlined once more.
We therefore call on the government to change its position and join the vast majority of the world’s states, the UN secretary-general and the Archbishop of Canterbury in calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Lebanon to save lives and prevent the destruction of that country.
Sign the letter to Tony Blair now
•Unconditional ceasefire now
•Stop Israel's attacks on Lebanon and Gaza
•End Tony Blair's support for Bush's wars
Join the national demonstration
Saturday 5 August: Assemble 12 Noon
Speakers Corner, Hyde Park, London
March to Parliament Square for rally
And as for whoever was saying "how do u know hezbollah was there?" Well, none of us do, and neither do you. You don't know what was there. War is ugly.
hey man. take it easy. people outside are being fed lies from alot of different sources. this person seems to be posing a reasonable question that should be answered with a reasonable, factual reply.
you want people to take it easy? the poster who like a mindless drone repeats Israeli lies as fact and we're supposed to take it easy? Her repetition of these lies gives Israel credibility where it has none and permission to continue killing and stealing wealth of civilians. Who do you think owns these buildings? Lebanese. Israel is destroying their livelihoods under their BS of 'terrorism' and ultimately stealing money from peoples pockets. NOT TO MENTION THE INNOCENT CIVILIANS THAT WERE MURDERED IN THE BOMBING OF THESE RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURHOODS! But, they're just collateral damage, right?
THERE IS NO TIME TO TAKE IT EASY....THE STAKES ARE TOO HIGH. THE STAKES ARE LIVES AND FUTURES BEING DEMOLISHED ON AN HOURLY BASIS BY ISRAEL.
Sorry ,man,i got carried away..genuinly sorry!
But you have to understand that most of the time ,this is the type of shit we're served
time and again,time and again.
still, the question itself which was deleted since,was...humm. a bit..moronic. You see a photo of a flattened residential area you could say wow! (yeah i know!)or" oh my god "or "well done" if you'e really nasty...no, all you could say is "but those were hizbollah buildings weren't they?" I mean common! Of trillions of other sensible comments you can make,, you choose the most... unbelievable!
Today i feel like having no time for utter stupidity.Sick and tired...60 years this shit has been going on for, you'd expect people to know a little bit better ,that,s all.

Hey...
Here few poles wrote already... I think that there is terrible. USA has contributed to this war too.
Poland is with you... We know that perfectly district council war. There'll be well.
Bye =*
P.S. I'll enter else here.
I´m Swedish and I do agree with you that a lot of the leaders of the EU are a disgrace and cowards, the meeting in Belgium did not result in a call for immediate cease fire, BUT it did result in an agreement to call for "an immediate end to hostilities".
I´m as frustrated as you, especially since everything takes far too long time!! What´s good is that at least the meeting resulted in this AND, very important that the EU were able to agree and stand united in this decision.
Well Geronimo I just wish with all my heart that this will come to an end soon, because it devestates me to sit here in Sweden and watch the news and the appalling suffering of the Lebanese people!
Sometimes I also wonder if the world leaders listen to us "small" citizens, all the petitions we sign and the letters we write?? But however it´s important not to remain silent, we have to keep making our voices heard!
Take care, and Finkployd: GREAT JOB! I visit this site several times a day!
I agree, this is in no way comparable to the extent of the destruction caused by the carpet bombing of Dresden but I think the analogy is more focused on the targeting of civilian structures with no military or strategic importance.
Hey Finkployd...i don't know where to post this...but here is BBC reporting on environmental pollution in Lebanon

Maybe Love was more durable than Hate; even if Love changed, some shadow of it, some lasting shape, persisted….Hatred was perhaps like a finger-print upon the smooth glass of the sensitive soul; a mere grease-mark, which disappeared if left alone.
-- Salman Rushdie, novelist
I'd like to write something that would be true, but it is not so easy. The shit that I see in most of the media makes me vomit. I don't believe in their lies, especially when the statistics are so cruel. Another NEWS, live from the places where dust and blood come one, and another meetings of the powerful politicians who don't give a shit in what they say. People still dying on the streets and in their homes. Everyone is a terrorist. Everyone is suspected. Cease fire and bombing from now on is the same. No fucking regrets. It kills my hope, and many others... I suppose.
Hi i'm an Italian-Lebanese, and i was in Lebanon, a week ago, i was able to evacuate with the italian evacuation on friday....I just wanted to say,of how great this idea was of making this blog, just to make an interaction possible....
I have a lot of family in Lebanon who is trying to get, out...but...you know morethan us from the ptherside of the sea....
I would liek to publish one of the thoughts we've had over these days with my parents, the main thing is that, beside form whois wrong and who is right, we have to just wake up and see, that hundreds and hundreds of people are dying for nothing, hundreds of children have given there lives for a political war... and especially it's a war, that neither the Lebanese people don't deserve. This is other countrie's war, but faught on our lands, a land which deserves peace....
I thought that, having lived through the autrocities of the Holocaust, the Jewish people would be likely to understand the plight of Palestenians for their land, and that the Jewish people would understand that what is needed is compassion, not HATE. Defend yourself, don't bomb innocent people and target ALL the infrastructure. Don't gloat that you have warned people to leave, AFTER, destroying their means for transportation. IF you are religious, you would believe that ALL people are created in God's image...and that all people deserve happiness and security... NOT JUST JEWS!
Robert, dear, drop that"terrorist"shit! I really have no problem with you not agreeing
with what Michal or anybody else is saying, afterall we're here to engage in some sensible and civilized dialogue, but if you choose to insult my (our) intelligence with this low grade
type of idiotic propaganda,I'd say to you listen here:I understand that you jump on that wagon of "war on terrorism" shit where everybody is indiscrimenately labelled terrorist as soon as they choose to defend their land(shebaa farms are still occupied land, but how could you know ,poor thing?) and themselves in the only way they can afford. GUERILLA. Oh ! that doesn't suit the way your cherished tough lady does things, sorry about that.
Israel,it seems, is the only country in the world that "owns" the right to defend itself,as for the others its again" terrorism".
"she is one tough lady who will always win thank god"
Oh please,no, not that, you really don't want to know what i think of your god or any other god for that matter. It seems to me that the most important thing (to you)he taught you
is to overvalue REVENGE and RETRIBUTION. So how about"she will always win thanks USA" . There....oh! btw,how about some education in those matters? I recommend you someone from your own kind(a wonderful, educated and most compassionate political scienist in the us) Norman G. Finkelstein "The holocaust Industry" is a good start. "Beyond chutzpah" is even more informative.
Take care you all! and btw, i'm in way in line with Hizbollah,FAR from it, but in this case I see no problem understanding their position.

keep up the good work! Only this kind of information is realiable. TV (mainly in Poland) shows only Jewish propaganda! These two pictures show how "surgical" strikes are made only on "terrorist's" buildings... From what I can see - is it true that half of Hezbollahs are children????? If so - Israel has to be proud to send tanks and planes to fight agianst children! I'm with You - people of Lebanon!!!!!!
ok - here's the question. How many countries are still in the "coalition of the unwilling" in Iraq?
My guess is many of those same countries are against this war.
Want to put pressure on the U.S. to put pressure on the Israelis? Write to you governments and demand they withdraw support for Iraq and pull their troops out, unless the U.S. agrees to a ceasefire.
I think it's the only way - this has to turn into a total, unmitigated disaster and utter failure of diplomacy for Bush to change course. Best thing I can think of is with draw troops from Iraq. He can't afford that. If the coalition falls apart because of his stance on this issue, the republicans have no hope for reelection and maybe we can get somewhat back to normal here.
Julie,
I live in Australia here and i probably shouldn't be saying this, but you really dont want to mess with the israeli lobby here, and why shouldn't it be any different from the states when australia too is part of the "coalition of the willing''?Our Pm John Howard is perfectly
in line with George W ...Whatever suits you sir! He's one little arrogant, unctuous, slimy liar. There's more compassion in a shoe tree than you'll find in his heart(if he's got one).
A representative of the lebanese community appealed to him to show more moderation. He went on national tv to say NO CHANCE(sic).
Iam wondering,Julie, if you read Mearsheimer and Walt's book, "the Israel lobby" which you can read on line,it gives a pretty grim picture of how policies concerning the middle east are defined no matter who the president is democrat or rep..You can find it on the London Review Of Books website.
take care,
Xavier.
