Climbing down into this crater I peer into the vehicle. The left front wheel-well is crushed inward against the clutch, brake and gas pedals. There – I see two leather shoes jammed between the pedals and the collapsed body of the car. They belonged to the driver. His feet were trapped in the accident and when he was extracted – whether dead or alive I do not know – his feet slipped out of the shoes and they remained behind. They are all that can connect us, the only sign that a human being plunged into this crater after the bridge was struck. I dislodge one of the shoes. It is a man’s shoe, size 42. Made in China. This is all I will ever know about the driver of this car.

Greetings from Houston, Texas. Thank you for doing such a great job with your blog. I was fortunate enough to visit Beirut, perhaps for the last time, in May of this year. I have been in love with it and Lebanon since my first visit in 1999. Its also nice to put a face with the blogger. Keep doing what you do so well, and we will keep reading and hoping and praying.
The Lebanese army and goverment must take control of Southern Lebanon!
Hezbollah must disassemble it's weapons at once!
These are the only logical terms that can be set in order for peace to return to the region. It is an international interest as well: there are numerous oil fields and natural resources in Lebanon and it's region. World economics must prevail evil Hezbollah forces that wish to hold us all captive, and may deny the modern world it's use of Earth's resources. A democratic and powerful Lebanon, with growing economy and tourism, is much superior to the alternative: a land controlled by fundemental Islamic terror groups, that targets civilians with Katiusha rockets and kidnaps soldier defending a country from within it's broders, spreading caos wherever it heads.
First, you must be a Musad (Israeli Intel.) member. You guys have been working hard to get the Lebanese people to turn on each other. From sms, phone, leflets, to now blogs. Keep trying... it won't happen. We are smarter and stonger than you evil people.
The plan is for Hezbollah to be a part of the Lebanese Army. It will be the National Guard and it will belong and operate under the gov't and Lebanese Army direction. I don't see anything wrong with this... God knows we need a guard from your evil forces. Our traditional army can't protect us from your evil powerful air power or tanks. Thus, it is in our national interest to have such guard. No, they will not be allowed to fire any rockets at you or take any actions across the border line. They will, however, be ready to kick your Israeli ass again and again as necessary when you guys attack our nation and people.
Zahi you are so right . I couldnt have put it better myself . Isnt it amazing how these guys demand equal shares but themselves never give a thing . And also how they have massive powerful armies and say nobody else should or they are evil and terrorists ....Since when were Musad desirable ?????....... answer Never !!!!
You give it them Zahi
Zahi...do u think Hezbollah will even agree to become part of the army and not a miltia...what incentive do they have to do this? I am pessimistic abou this whole thing but I hope it all works out, there cannot be 2 voices for the lebanese people, one for the south and one for the rest...if we want to be united, we should unite in every way.
I know for a fact that Hezzbollah agrees to it. In fact, they had agreed to it in principal right before this war started and they were in process working out the details. Israel had this planned long time ago and they used the incident at the border with the 2 soldiers as an excuse. Israel was conducting invasion training at the border on June 11 - only couple of weeks before the war started.
I agree with you, we do need to have one voice and be united. This is th eonly way it should. However, practicaly speaking, our traditional army can't defend our homes and lands and therefore we NEED Hezbollah to be part of that army. I am certain this is how it will work out. Although I disagree with some of Hezbollah's actions, such as firing rockets at civilians, they are not what the US and Israel makes them to be. They truly care about every single Lebanese and they have shown that in 2000 after winning the first war against Israel. As Lebanese, we MUST not fall into Israel's trap and the US pressure to eliminate Hezbollah as this will make us very vulnerable in the future. Once again, I don't suggest we have a miltia... I do suggest though that we maintain this strength as long as it is under the Lebanese gov't direction.
Why would Hezbollah agree? Hezboullah as met most of its goals and objectives:
- Its Shi'ite sect now plays a significant role in the gov't and they have a voice,
- They kicked Israel out,
- They are about to get their prisoners back (in process)
- The Shebaa Farms issue is on the international table and the UN is now showing support for Lebanon to have this land back if Syria does what it says it would do (we shall see soon on this item)
- The option stated above offers them to remain in power politically and militarily (even if the militarily part is under a gov't they are a part of)
- Syria is out of Lebanon and thus it limits their choices
We need to set our emotions and differances aside now and think long term... think... what are our choices and how can we defend our people, nation and homes if Israel attacks us in the future? We know the US won't help us. We know the Arabs won't help us. We know no one will help us... all we have is ourseleves and thus we need to have internal strength and not fall into Israel's trap.
Zahi, i agree with you, in that our army is weak and that the strength of hizballah is needed...and I hope that you are right and that it will work out as you are predicting. I am not sure i agree that Hizballah cares about all Lebanese though...I think hizballah represents the needs of shiites in Labanon and thats ok, but NOT when it puts the needs and desires of the rest of the nation at stake. That said, I could be proven wrong if they do as you think they will and incorporate into the National army...that will prove that they do not have their own agenda for Leb.
There isnt numerous oil fields in Lebanon. Is there? (Correct me if I am wrong about that). If there is, its not like in S. Arabia. Logic Rules, I think oil is a small resource in LEbanon. Lots of trees in LEbanon though, but not sure about oil.
there is an oil pipeline htat was dedicated 2 days b-4 the bomobing of the Beirut airport. It stretches from the "stans" through Turkey and around the Mediterranean coast. The plan is to stetch it alongside IIsreal, Lebanon and Syria. Isreali will then control dispersal of oil to east Asia. Is it all becoming clear now?
hey fink, don't know why i havent been able to post comments here lately. Just want to say thx you for doing such a good job with the pictures, and hope you're alright.
