Mo Kabbani - a dude in the government - just announced that he can convert the idle Qoleiat 'Airport' into an International Airport in 24 hours, in the wake of the Opposition blockade of the Beirut International Airport.

it seems you know little if not nothing of civilian aircrafts.
A simple look at your map, and you will see that there is comfortable room and some more for any aircraft to land at Qloeiat without ever flying over Syria
That may not be true. MEA used to operate a BEIRUT-QOLEIAT flight back in the late 80's when roads to the North were blocked.
I am certain we did not need to travel over Syrian terrain then.
There's the Mediterranean option, but that depends on international flight paths and airspace rights. I'm not an expert.
It's funny you didn't post a closeup shot of the airport. It clearly appears in google earth that the landing approach is from the sea.
actually that was my source: google earth only shows the runway leading from / to the sea - this does not indicate approach / departure directions.
anyone ever flown into / out of qoleiat? my source has.
I asked a friend who has flown into the airport during the war.. the descent is done over the sea. You never fly over Syria. Dunno about takeoffs though..
I don't even know why we need to consider this remark by Mr. Qabbani. It actually shows how ridiculous, personal, and selfish this whole thing has become. ...ana a2wa minnak, w bifta7 mataar tani...oof, w bayyi 2a2wa min bayyak...
This doesn't solve anything. inshallah mnifta7 mallioon mataar. Lebanese need to start finding something else to do besides fighting each other. we need to find a permenant solution. Khalas ba2a, 3eib. r7amouna ba2a
It's not necessarily a good thing. the sound of the planes is disturbing :p
